Society of Physicians in Wales
The Society of Physicians in Wales works to promote better care for patients in Wales presenting with both acute and non urgent medical problems. Membership is open to all Consultant, Career Grade and Training Grade doctors practising in Wales, whether their work is purely specialty based or not, and whether their work involves the general medical intake or otherwise. There is a modest annual membership fee of £25 which is purely to fund administration and the two educational meetings that the Society organises. The Society aims to be inclusive, and there is no need for nomination to join. A doctor can join the electronic mailing list (via this website) without joining the Society.
The Society organises two educational meetings each year. The autumn meeting is a joint meeting with the RCP (London) and is held in central Cardiff over two days in November. The spring meeting is held in Portmeirion on a Friday afternoon and Saturday morning in early May.
The first meeting of The Society of Physicians in Wales was held in the Rockfeller Laboratories of the Welsh National School of Medicine at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary, on Saturday 7th July 1951. The founding members' aims were "The advancement of knowledge of general medicine and related subjects and the promotion of friendship among the members" - these remain the aims of the society.
